How to keep older drivers safe on the road

As we get older our bodies start changing. Our eye sight isn't as sharp. Sometimes our coordination seems to be a little off. This isn't something that everyone experiences but many do. When you are driving, you have to be safe. There are several things that you need to do to be safe when you are an older driver. No one really wants to admit that they are getting older. It's important to talk to your parents and help make them and others on the road safe.

Take a driving course. It's been a long time since you have taken your drivers test or learned to drive. It's a good idea to take a refresher course in case the laws have changed. I live in the land of roundabouts and they can be intimidating. You can look for drivers courses for seniors, so you aren't in a class with sixteen year olds. You can possibly qualify for a discount on your insurance for completing the course.

Exercising is important to drive better. Driving can be a strain on your body and sometimes you have to make a hard turn. Exercise also helps your reflexes and helps you focus so you can make good decisions while driving.

Getting your eyes checked regularly. I know going to the eye doctor is annoying and time consuming, it's important to go every year and get an exam. You may not notice slight vision differences but they can be dangerous on the road otherwise. As you age your vision changes, you also need healthy eyes to drive.

Get yearly check ups. You should visit your doctor every year, even if you feel healthy. If your doctor feels that you should have driving restrictions or stop driving all together, please follow their instructions. Not being able to drive stinks but there's a reason you shouldn't.

Keep up with car maintenance, your car should be healthy too. You may drive an older car, so make sure it is in good working order so you don't break down on the side of the road.Consider purchasing a new used car to cut down on repair costs.

I hope these tips help you stay safe on the road.
