When you are looking for a used car, it is important where you buy from. You have a couple options, you can buy a used car from a dealership or you can buy a used car from a private seller. It may cost a little more but buying a car from a dealership is usually much wiser. When you deal with a dealership, you know that their business is cars. You will know that they are more informed and know what to look for as far as repairs and other problems with the car. When you deal with a private person, you are not really sure what the condition the used car is in. There could be a whole plethora of problems that you may not know about.
Most car dealerships receive their inventory of used cars from people trading in to get a car. Dealerships tend to have a mechanic on staff to check out what the car’s condition is. You don’t really have to worry much about getting a lemon when you go through a dealership. They also have a reputation to uphold.
They are easy to find if something goes wrong. Buying from a private dealer from an ad on Craigslist or social media, people can disappear more easily. Now that most smart phones have a call blocking feature, the person you made the deal with can avoid you.
Dealerships are more likely to offer a warranty on the used car, a private seller will not. A private person can say things like, this car is my baby or runs great, even when it doesn’t always.
You can do your research on who you are buying your used car from if you buy from a dealer. You can know that you will be probably getting a good car based on other’s reviews. Remember though a few bad reviews doesn’t mean that a dealership is necessarily untrustworthy, some people complain just to complain. Make sure you do your research. Private sellersprobably aren’t going to have reviews online unless they sell a lot of cars or are swindlers.
A very important part of buying a used car is the title. When you buy a used car from a dealership you know that you are getting a clean title and have no problems with registering it. You have no idea when you buy a car from a private person if it’s really their car, if there is a lien on the title, or if you will be able to register it at all. Once the transaction is complete, there is no way of knowing if you will be able to drive your car legally.
Unless you are planning to pay cash for your used car, you will need to arrange financing. Many car dealers have financing departments and you can get your car financed on the spot. Financing from a private person is much more complicated, and you will probably pay a higher interest rate.
When deciding where to buy a used car, carefully weigh the benefits and risks of going to a dealer versus a private seller.
