We spend so much time in our cars. Sometimes, they have an odor. There are many different odors your car can have. You can have odors from dirty clothes or old French fries that fell between the seats. Did you know that some odors can tell you that there is a problem with your car? Here are some things you should know about different odors:
If you smell something sweet it is likely a leak in your cooling system. Antifreeze has a syrupy sweet smell. You should get this checked at your car dealership because breathing antifreeze is not a good thing. It can also make your windows and windshield fog up. If it’s fogged up you will have trouble seeing.
A musty smell while using your air conditioning could mean that you have mold in your car. You definitely don’t want to breathe in mold spores because it will make you sick. Moisture collects on the evaporator and can create mold just as it can anywhere else.
Rotten eggs or sulfur could mean you have a problem with your catalytic convertor.
Rotten milk or rotten fruit is probably exactly that. Your children may have left their snack or sippy cup in the car and it rolled under the seat. I don’t know how many times I found a sippy cup days after Noah had it in the car.
If something smells like it is burning is problem from your oil. You need to make sure you get regular oil changes. If you don’t it can ruin your car. I know this first hand when I was stranded on the side of the road on Christmas Day years ago.
If you smell burnt toast it could be an electrical problem. You could have a short circuit which could definitely cause a fire.
Smelling a hint of gas is normal but if it’s overpowering make sure you replaced the gas cap so you aren’t leaking everywhere.
If you smell any strange odors that weren’t brought by the people or things in your car it’s best to get it checked out.
