It’s so important to make sure the person who works on your car is a licensed mechanic. It is not enough that they say they know what they are doing. I am part of a neighborhood app and a woman was looking for someone to work on her car. Someone responded and said, that they weren’t a licensed mechanic. They assured her that he knew what he was doing. The woman hired the guy and he really messed up her car. He didn’t know what he was doing and instead of telling her, he took the money and said he completed the job. The woman had to not only pay to fix her original problem but to also fix what the guy messed up. Her extra repairs cost her hundreds of dollars.
While some people might truly know what they are doing, unless you know for sure, don’t hire someone who isn’t a licensed mechanic. I would trust my uncle to fix anything of mine but that’s because I know he knows what he’s doing. If you don’t know a mechanic, you can always take your car to a car dealership and they can fix your car. If you take it to a dealership you know the service department has experience with working on your specific type of car. They can also help with seeing if it’s covered under warranty.
It might be tempting to save some money and help out a neighbor by hiring them to fix your car. I totally understand that. It’s natural to want and help others. Maybe have them do something else that doesn’t require specific skills. Maybe hire them to mow your lawn or pull weeds. Remember that your car is transporting your family and you don’t want to break down on the side of the road.
