License plates are always interesting to look at. It’s a good way to figure out where someone is from. It’s also a good way to pass the time while you are in the car. Growing up, our license plates started with a specific number. The two digit number was the county you lived in. It was cool when you were in another state and you saw a car from your county. They have eliminated this now.
License plates can be personalized with seven letters or numbers. I have seen some pretty funny ones. Some I couldn’t figure out and some that made my head hurt. As long as it’s appropriate and not taken, your personalized license plate can say almost anything.
In 1979, a man in California had a personalized license plate that said “no plate.” In a few months, he ended up with over 2,500 citations for having “no plate” in the spot where the license plate number goes. Other ones that have caused problems throughout the years are Missing, none and no tag. I am pretty sure they are the list of banned plates.
In an effort to save metal during World War 2, some license plates were manufactured from soybean based fiberboard.
Prisoners still make license plates in jail. Prison jobs are great for inmates to learn a trade or responsibilities. Idle hands in prison can be a dangerous thing.
Rental cars regardless where you rent, will likely have plates from other states. Every time we went a car, it has another state on it. We always pretend we are from that state when we are in the car.
Some states require both front and back license plates. The states that just require a back plate are: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Some car dealerships use the front license plate spot to advertise where the car was purchased.
US Mail Trucks do not have license plates. They have their own tracking system. They also can’t get parking tickets and other fees.
