When blogging relationships go bad..

After recent events, that have to do with my blog, I am starting to wonder if all of my efforts are worth it. I really enjoy blogging and reviewing products and doing giveaways but, I am starting to question these things. I have many wonderful relationships with many pr agents and businesses which I am grateful to have. There is one “business” relationship that I had for three months; I really worked hard on everything I did for them. I put business in parentheses because it seemed like it was much more personal as this person emailed me almost daily. I went above and beyond what a normal product reviewer would do, I spent hours upon hours doing things that weren’t really in the scope of my job. It was almost like I had become an employee of this company. I was promised multiple times that they would fully sponsor me to go to BlogHer 10.

I spent my time writing posts for them that were not product reviews. I posted and posted for them. One I had to go back and edit because they stopped their relationship with a foundation. That meant I had to rewrite part of it, so it would make sense. I tweeted about the business multiple times. I also researched for them. I gave them free advertising for three months. I wanted to make sure they got their money’s worth. BlogHer is not cheap by any means.

I prepared a Twitter party and then held the Twitter party on a very devastating day, the last thing I wanted to do was have fun at a Twitter party. I wanted to be there for the community that I belong to. I wanted to mourn a loss of a fellow blogger. Yet, I sucked it up, I superglued a fake smile on my face, and did my job. Little did the guests of the party know that I was crying between my tweets. I was so upset, it turned to frustration because I had not had the help that I thought that I was going to have. I had to deal with other things between the others that were helping me. I had to deal with the sponsor making rude comments at the guests. I thought that overall it was a success. Anyone who has ever hosted a Twitter party knows how difficult they are to run and how stressful they are.

After all the hard work I put in to the company, and after all the nice things I did, I am left with nothing in return. They informed me out of the blue after emailing me as if nothing was wrong and after they sent me a Christmas present and then bailed on me. There were many questionable actions shown by the owner of the company. Many that made my stomach turn. I should have known but I trusted them. Some of the wrong doings were but not limited to insulting other bloggers, forwarding their pitches to me and making fun of them, lying to others, and just plain rudeness.

I was so excited to be able to go to Blogher 10. I talked about it all the time. I was like a kid at Christmas. I know it’s probably not all I think it is, but I want the experience of going. I want to go and learn and meet up with my friends that I have made in the last six months. I want to be able to have some time where I am around adults for an extended period of time without other people’s kids. Everyone deserves a break.

I want to represent a company or companies and use my voice to promote them. For me it is more than just a trip to New York. It is a way to break out of my shell and bloom in to the blogger I want to be through the training and the possible networking I will gain from this experience. It is not a trip it is an adventure and an experience. Now, I am not sure I can even have that experience because of the hurtful things this company did to me.

I am sure one or two of you are thinking, it’s just business. Well, it is not. It is extremely personal and extremely hurtful. It would have been completely different if it was just someone I did a few product reviews for and they just changed their mind. It was something I invested my time and heart completely and fully in this company and I thought that I was doing a great job. I was completely floored that someone would have the nerve to just do this to me after she knew I worked so hard and did so much. It is just so wrong to this to me or anyone. I have spent a lot of time crying. I have gone back and forth between crying and being angry. I feel like I failed and there was nothing else I could do. I felt helpless, I immediately reached out to my friends and I want to thank them all for their continued support. They mean so much to me.

Please don’t walk over bloggers. They deserve the respect and kindness just as much as anyone else. We work very hard for our blogs and for the PR and companies. Only a blogger would truly understand the time and effort we put in to our work. I am sure that most of the companies appreciate all the work bloggers do. It is like when you work really hard on a bunch of projects and once they are completed they call you in their office and fire you.

I am pretty sure I want to keep blogging. I am trying not to let one bad apple ruin it for me. My only regret from blogging is working with that company. I am still extremely upset about this whole ordeal. I feel like I wasted three months for nothing more than empty promises and many lies. I hope that this post brings caution and awareness to others especially bloggers. I hate having the mentality of not being able to trust the people I work with, and now questioning everything and wondering if the same thing will happen again.

So, here I am again back to square one, for looking for sponsorship to BlogHer 10. If you are interested in possibly sponsoring me, please use my contact form or email me. I will work very hard to promote your company. I will post an informational post in the future. I just wanted to get this all off my chest and perhaps help me work through the complete disappointment and hurt that I am feeling right now. I hope that this post helps someone too.

  1. Im so sorry to hear what the company did to you. It is not right at all. I am a blogger and I also do reviews. It does take up a lot of my time but I love doing it. I really hope that you find that perfect sponsor. Companies like this needs to be spread to all the bloggers so that the hard workers like you don't get hurt and waste time... Hugs

  2. That just sucks. I am so sorry they bailed on you. They should owe you $$$ for the hours you put in, expecting payment in the form of Blog Her sponsorship. You will find another company that is worth promoting. Good luck!

  3. So sorry to hear about this..that's terrible...Trust me when I say Kharma has it's ways!

  4. It's refreshing to know that there are people such as yourself that have such an excellent work ethic. Work ethics are totally disapprearing in society today. I'm sure you will land on your feet. Best of Luck to you.

  5. Seriously, some people have no shame and absolutely no ethics.

First, I definitely think that you need to obtain legal counsel. My friend (a lawyer) just read this and suggested that you do this immediately or at least file a claim in small claims court.

Next, I think that you should name this company. Tell us exactly who did this to you. You are being way too nice!

Warn all of the other bloggers out there not to do anything with them as well. Naming the company will insure that another blogger doesn't get ripped off or duped as well.

Whatever we can do to help spread the word, let us know.

  6. Sorry this happened to you. I think I saw some tweets from the company you are referring to and you are right, they suck. I'm sure not all companies are like they are and you should trust your instinct - if it smells like $h!t - it probably is! Glad I never worked with them. You deserve so much more!

  7. What she did was very wrong! I hope that you find someone better and more deserving of your time and energy to sponsor you for BlogHer 10. Good luck sweetie!

  8. Sheila, you were taken advantage of and their promises to provide something in exchange for your efforts and them not following through, is criminal!

I'd love to know who this company is, both as a blogger and a consumer because business or personal, they should not get away with treating you like this.

    ReplyDelete
  9. That's just plain WRONG. I RT'ed this on twitter for ya.

  10. They did you wrong and it's bull. I'm sorry you had to deal with shady business practices. I'm starting to think they deserve SCAMMER of the year award. Off to stumble this post.

  11. I agree with some of the other commenter's. The blogging community needs to know who this company is so that no one else is taken by them. Our time is valuable and that company doesn't deserve what the mommy blogging community can offer.

  12. Absolutely horrible business ethics. Like others have said, karma has a way. I have no problem helping you spread the word about this experience you had.

  13. I am so sorry Sheila. I really am. As a new blogger just starting our, I am glad that I read this. I will keep my eye out for companies like this. I agree with some of the other commenters, I would love it if you named the business that did this to you. They need to see that you are serious and hurt. They need to see how unprofessional their actions were/are.

  14. I am sorry this happened to you. I am sure you will find another sponsor soon who would be lucky to work with you. Your ethics are admirable unlike the company you mentioned in this post. I agree I think you are being way too nice and I think you should post the name of the company so another blogger will not be taken advantage of. Good Luck!

  15. Sheila you need to come out and tell other bloggers who this company is! If they did this to you then chances are they are doing it to others! It takes someone standing up for themselves to stop this kind of behavior! I am sorry you were cheated. I know how excited you were to go to BlogHer!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Awww....don't let one bad company sour you on blogging. Would you feel better to take a short break?

    ReplyDelete
  17. That's horrible. I agree that you should name the company, so that other bloggers can avoid them
I hope that you still get a sponsorship to blogher.

  18. I agree with others that if you've got the details of what was promised in writing or email, you've probably got grounds for a lawsuit. The question is just if you want to put the emotional effort into pursuing a lawsuit. If they're this smarmy, they won't give up easily.

And for those who want to know what company, it looks from the labels list in the left frame of the blog that there's only one listing labeled "Twitter Party", and the corresponding company also has the highest frequency in the label list...?

  19. Well Sheila as you know I'm NOT a blogger but hope to be soon!!! I think I can figure out who the person is by looking at your left sidebar and seeing who your only twitter party was for---Bea's Gift Basket. So if everyone is wanting to know without you having to say, I just outed them. If it's not them...ooops you better remove this post! Hang in there sweet sheilacakes!!! Are you still going to get to go and visit your dad??? XOXOX pammie

  20. I don't have my own blog but I really enjoy reading other people's (including yours of course!) and I can tell they take a lot of time and effort. What that company did to you is not right. Do whatever you need to do to feel better...whether that is taking a break or naming names. Good luck with BlogHer, you deserve to be there.

    ReplyDelete
  21. that is terrible. From reading your older tweets I also figured out who it was. hopefully the next person they try this with will have read this

    ReplyDelete
  22. i Def agree you should post the name. Not only should we all stay away from them, but show them they cant walk on you.
Stay strong! We def understand what you are saying.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So sorry this happened to you....

I hope you get a new sponsor soon!

  24. OUT HER! Other Bloggers need to be aware of WHO she is.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You need to speak of who she is. It's not right to do anyone like that. You spent way too much time promoting them for her to to do this to you. She'll just move onto someone else and screw them.

You just can't make a "business" deal and then back out on your part after the other done all the work they were supposed to. I'm pissed for you. I'd be irate if it happened to me.

    Best of luck!

    ReplyDelete
  26. All one has to do is look thur your older post, twitter parties ect. to see who the "B" in you bonnet is!
    Thanks for the heads up!
I have not done any drawings but will be sure to put her on my ignore list!

  27. hope your feeling better now that you had a chance to vent. It's natural you should feel this way but don't let it bother you anymore. Not worth it. Live and Learn....

  29. Hi there. I'm sorry this happened to you! I wanted to suggest that you keep your eye out for our Call for Volunteers for BlogHer, coming soon. Volunteers get a free conference pass, so that is at least part of the expense covered.

    Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm sorry you've been mislead or mistreated by this company. Not being clear on what the relationship was I can't say more. But if you had a contractual relationship, verbal or written, you need to pursue the legal end. If not, chalk it up to lesson learned.

Be aware that if you do mention the name of the company or agent you should be completely truthful as you could be held responsible for libel..just sayin.

If you need help wrangling sponsors, give me a holler. I'll be glad to help you'

    ReplyDelete
  31. Don't bash yourself for the action of someone else. You need to be you and that is all. Bloggers and all of us who read and enjoy great blogs like yourself are a caring and powerful group.
I say "out" the company and let us all give them the backlash they deserve.
You have a great blog that is appreciated by many, don't forget that.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am so sorry this happened to you.

For someone who has hosted Twitter Parties, written reviews, worked on VLOGS, and sat on conference calls for consulting I understand the hard work we put into companies we believe in.

    You believed.

    And you know what?

That's ok. That company, that person doesn't deserve to have such a hardworking blogger represent them at such a prestige conference.

You'll find a way, I just know it. As Elisa said it, look for volunteer opportunities at the conference, there will be conference pass contests everywhere in the next few months I'm sure.

Last year, LabelDaddy.com sponsored myself, two others, AND gave away 2 conference passes. We're unsure of the contests we are running this year, but look for other companies running similar contest opportunities.

Head up sweetie! Tomorrow the sun will rise, you'll lift your head, open your laptop, and discover you are worth MORE than "that company" will ever imagine.

  33. I'm sorry you've had to deal with this Sheila. I think you've got great tips from the others and any company would be lucky to sponsor you with all the hard work you put into promoting their company.

  34. So sorry to hear of this. If anything good should come of this perhaps it is that we should stay true to our 'inner' gut about someones character and not stand for rudeness or disrespect of others. The signs were there unfortunately that this person was of low moral character..anyone who makes fun of the very people their company sells to has deep seeded character flaws. Hopefully you will now find a PR person and company who holds themselves (and you) to a higher standard. In the future I know you will think twice about working with someone who displays the kind of low actions that this person did and save yourself a lot of time and effort. Keep your heart in your blog and don't be discouraged I'm sure it will all work out!

  36. I happened to stumble upon this post by accident. I have never visited your blog before but I am glad that I did.
This happens all of the time to bloggers and it makes me so mad. I had sponsorship promised to me and another blogger for Blog World Expo. The other blogger dropped everything to go meet with the owner of the company that was sponsoring us. We did a TON of work for the company. We even offered ideas and suggestions on how to better the product. Then out of the blue they stopped returning calls, emails and Blog World passed without even a word from the company. We cut our losses and moved on. Recently we found out that the company had made money off of our ideas.
To say we were mad was an understatement.
This was not the first time a company had screwed us over but it certainly was the last.
I am so sick of companies thinking that they own us. I had a giveaway go up 2 hrs late due to a child having to be rushed to the hospital with a broken wrist and the company cussed us out and wanted us to pay them back for the product they had sent to us for review. Seriously, 2 hrs late.
To me none of this is worth it anymore. The free stuff is cool but not worth the pain and wasted time. You never know when they will turn on you.
I am doing reviews still, but very few and far between and I have to KNOW that the company is a good company. I am grateful to have worked with some great ones that I trust and will always work with them but the rest, I stay away from for now.
You should state who this person was that did this to you. You should also remove all advertisements and posts written about them. They do not deserve to get any more good press from you. Also, I would check to make sure that they sent out the prizes for the Twitter Party. I have had sponsors back out after the fact. One we ended up having to foot the bill for ourselves, and it was $299 for the product and the person who backed out was also a BLOGGER who did not like the person who won and wanted us to pick someone else. That is not fair and unethical.

  37. Sheila, so sorry for an awful experience, to feel like you were had and taken advantage of. Unfortunately not everyone in business or personally have high level of standards or ethics. If you out them, maybe do so quietly (in my opinion) as to give other bloggers a head's up without compromising your position.

A start to a new year means that your chapter will evolve and grow and you will have the fabulous opportunity you worked so hard for. Hang in there and be sure that others go that the same distance as you when working with them. Kudos for standing up and saying something.

  38. Wow... just wow...
I am so sorry you had to deal with this! I hope you are able to gain sponsorship from someone else. This company should certainly owe you payment for time spent. I'd send them an invoice!

  39. That just broke my heart for you! I'm so sorry you were treated like that! I'm with everyone else, if you have it in writing you should have a case against them. I think you have a wonderful blog and I enjoy it every time I come here.

I hope you can find another sponser!!

  40. AMAZING, right that so many have tales to share. I have my own. I would love you to name the company so as to ward ppl of them, but make sure whatever you do, you GO to BlogHer10 as you have your heart set on it. Last year my hubby lost his job and I was going to Type A only because I got sponsored, the week off they changed courses and changed terms and did not want a contract. I decided against having a meager sponsorship and opted to suck it up and go. I am STILL paying that travel etc but no way is any company going to sideline me from my goals.

I a going to expect to see you at BlogHer. Chin up, you are not alone!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am so sorry this happened, You wrote a wonderful post explaining the feelings any one of us would have had in this situation. This company should be ashamed and I am sorry to know that they treated you that way.

I am believing with you that you will be at Blogher 10! You will be there :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. That is absolutely terrible! I wish I had the money to send you to BlogHer but I can't.

All I can say is in the future, have the sponsor write up a letter stating their intention to sponsor you including exactly what that entails and have them sign it and send it to you or something.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I feel sick to my stomach for you. Very unethical on the part of the company. You're even being kind in this post by not naming names which shows what kind of person you are. I hope that another company sees this and realizes what an asset you'd be to them. I hope to see you at BlogHer some way. I'm willing to help. DM me on Twitter about some ideas I have.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I agree that the company should be stated I would hate to think that they pull this with someone else and they to wind up in the position you now are in. I ope that you can find another company that will stand by you

  45. So sorry to see this happened to you. I am new to the review & giveaway world. I hope that I will be able to tell if someone is trying to take advantage of me. It's really a shame because it is a lot of hard work. I hope you're able to get sponsorship!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hoping you are able to partner with a better company for BlogHer. Just know that your blogging is important to those who read it!

    ReplyDelete
  47. As horrible as it sounds, I agree with the others that you should name the company. I don't like posting negative or giving anyone a bad name, but if companies know that we will stick together and not be abused, they will hesitate to do this kind of thing.
I'm just so sorry that this happened to you. That's a lot of hard work just thrown away by them. So sad for you. Please don't give up though. I think your blog is fantastic and your design is adorable! A righteous man falls seven times and keeps getting up. Fight back!
