My
family collects shells that we find on vacation at the beach. I prefer
to go on a road trip when going somewhere warm. It's so much easier to
transport shells in the car. When you fly with shells, it's easy for
them to break. If you purchase shells from a store they are usually are
coated to make them stronger. When we visit my mom and fly we end up
leaving shells at her house because starfish and sand dollars are very
fragile.
Shells are fun to make crafts with. You may see a big sand dollar in a store while you are on vacation. Why not purchase a few and make this simple craft. You can use the shells you find on the beach. If you have many shells like my family does, you come up with cool things to do with them. I have containers of shells we have found all over my house. I also have some in my garage. My mom also has an extensive shell collection at her house.
A big sand dollar
Random shells you have found or bought if you don't have beach access.
Hot glue gun
Place the sand dollar down flat. Make sure the hole is at the top so you can hang it up.
Arrange some shells on the sand dollar until you like how it looks.
Hot glue them on the sand dollar. You can use craft glue in a pinch however it is a lot harder to get them to stick because of all the grooves and the shapes of the shells.
Let dry and the hang with ribbon or twine. You can also put it on a plate stand if you don't want to hang it up.
This is a fun craft for kids and you can also learn about the different types of shells.
