If you have a lot of guests to your home something you could consider is buying an inexpensive car for them to use while they are visiting. This is a great idea if they always have to rent a car. It’s never a bad idea to have a back up car. You may have car trouble and need a back up. Getting a car rental covered from insurance can be a hard task. Having a backup can help ease some concerns.
Another idea is if you travel to the same family member’s home a lot and always rent a car, you could possibly buy a cheap car to use while you are there. If you rent a car a lot, you know how it adds up. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. It could just be a nice used car. Then all you have to worry about is getting from and to the airport. You no longer have to rely on a car rental place who may or may not have a decent sized car. You don’t have to deal with taking a shuttle or waiting in line to pick up or return your car. You aren’t throwing your money away on a rental for a week.
Sometimes it’s not feasible to have your host drive you everywhere. People have jobs and you might want to spend the day doing something fun. I would recommend only doing this with close family though. Car rental is expensive. I know for a couple weeks it’s $800 for the cheapest rental. I bet if you added up your car rental for the year it is probably close to the price of a car. I know that my mom has paid a small fortune for rental cars. She always says she should just buy a cheap car and leave it at my house.
