Summer is a great time to travel the United States on a road trip. Sometimes however the unthinkable happens and you get in a car accident. We love visiting Florida because my mom lives there. One thing I know about the area she lives in is, there are a lot of bridges. Honestly, driving over bridges occasionally freaks me out. Don’t get me wrong, I love the view of being surrounded by water.

Going over the Sunshine Skyway makes me a little nervous.  The Howard Franklin and the Courtney Campbell do not go up in the air like the Sunshine Skyway does. Pretty much everywhere in the Tampa Bay Area takes you over a bridge. I can name most of them. We go on roads that have a drawbridge every day when we visit her. I hope no one tries to beat the light and it starts to open. I know there are safety precautions in place so that doesn’t happen. 

Accidents can happen on vacation, just as they can at home. It can be easier to get in to an accident when you are unfamiliar with the roads and the traffic. Vacations are supposed to be carefree and you or someone else may have that frame of mind where maybe they don’t pay that much attention. It only takes a second to get in an accident. They may be distracted or trying to figure out where to go. 

There is also a lot of foot traffic in vacation spots. Be sure to use crosswalks and make sure that no one is coming before you cross. Just because you have the right of way and it says you can cross sometimes drivers ignore it and go anyways. 

Summer weather in Florida can be very unpredictable, but count on usually having a thunderstorm in the afternoon every day. Driving conditions in pouring rain can make it difficult to see other cars and pedestrians. 

If you find yourself in a car accident while on vacation, treat it as you would if you were at home. Try and stay calm and exchange information. Call the police to file a report, take photos and if you have injuries be sure to go to the hospital to get checked out.
