Road trip safety tips

We love to travel and take road trips. It’s a lot of fun spending time together and seeing the country together. It’s always a magical time. One of the things I think about is road trip safety. I have talked to Noah about safety while traveling. He knows that he isn’t supposed to talk to strangers or go with them. He knows if someone tries to grab or hurt him, he should yell FIRE. That’s something that will get people’s attentions. I think about when we go to crowded places like amusement parks. I always keep an eye on him but I am afraid we will get separated. He knows to find an employee to locate me. He doesn’t have a cell phone so he can’t call me just yet. We even have a weird noise we make together so he could do that, and it would be more effective than Mom.

Don’t travel with a lot of money or valuables. I know cash is easy to use, but try and use your cards as much as possible.  Check your account while traveling too. If you are staying in a hotel, use the safe. It will give you a piece of mind. Keep an extra eye on your purse or wallet, if you are in an area where theft seems to occur.

Take photos of your ID and insurance cards just in case. When I was on my honeymoon years ago, someone stole my ID out of my hotel room. They didn’t take anything but my ID. I had to file a police report and thankfully I was able to come home. I was subjected to extra searches at the airport but thankfully the case number and my marriage license was enough. 

Have a fully stocked safety kit, food and water. You will want that if your care breaks down.

Get your oil changed, and your brakes and fluids checked before you depart. Keep an eye on the gas gauge too. You don't want to run out of gas in the middle of nowhere. 

If you are traveling out of state or more importantly out of country, call your bank and let them know so your card isn’t flagged for suspicious activity. You don’t want to be left with no money.

Be aware of who are hanging out with. You might meet some new friends while on your road trip, and want to hang out with them. Be careful, they could steal your money or even do drugs. You don’t want to be caught with the wrong people and end up in jail. This goes for your kids too. I have some pretty crazy stories about kids I met on vacation.

When you need to take a break from driving, go to a well lit and safe place to stop. Stay away from Rest Stops at night.  If you are tired, stop at a hotel. Don’t try and sleep in your car. You don’t want to drive all night and fall asleep while driving, that’s extremely dangerous. You might want to make it, but please don’t risk your life or the lives of others.
