What to do when there's severe weather while in the car

Lately, we have had quite a bit of severe weather. There has been so many tornadoes lately. It's not even tornado season. The thing about tornadoes is that it can happen anytime. There was one the day before Christmas Eve rather close to me. It happened in the middle of the night. It can be scary because tornadoes can happen with no or little warning. It's made me brush up on my tornado safety. I have been lucky enough to be at home most of the time but what happens if you are in the car during a severe storm or a tornado.

  Here are some tips to stay safe during severe weather in the car.

Try to find a business to go in if there is a tornado warning.

If you can't find somewhere to find shelter get out of your car and find a ditch. Try to keep your car as far away as possible so you don't get hit with the debris or even your car.

Stay clear of bridges. You might think being under a bridge would be safe but it really isn't.

Make sure your first aid kit and car safety kit is always fully stocked in case of an emergency.

If there is severe weather please just stay home where you are safe. It's dangerous to be on the roads. You are also causing traffic that could delay emergency vehicles.

Don't drive through big puddles. You might not be able to see how deep it really is. Your car could stall out or have other problems.

If you see down power lines or fallen trees do not drive by them. Power lines can still be active. Please follow  Louie the Lightning Bug's advice and  avoid fallen power lines.

Go slow and drive with your headlights on. Being in a hurry when you can't see where you are going is dangerous.

Expect delays. If you have to be somewhere leave early. Remain calm and diligent so everyone arrives safely.

Listen to the radio or have a weather radio in your car so you are informed of severe weather.
