Noah was Sick and Child Health Tips

This past weekend Noah hit two milestones. I am not happy about these milestones but I knew it was going to happen at some point. The first milestone that makes you a worried parent was his very first ear infection. He also had Pink Eye.  It’s common to get an ear infection and Pink eye at the same time because everything is so close together. He was miserable. His eyes were so red and he screamed about his ears hurting. I had to take him to the doctor after keeping him home two days from school. Sure enough he was sick. The doctor basically looked at him and said he has pink eye and looked in his ears and he had an ear infection. That was that. She handed me a prescription for Augmentin aka the super expensive antibiotic, that no store includes in free antibiotics.  So this is milestone number two, he had his very first prescription. Any other illness he has had was treatable with over the counter stuff. He is extremely healthy. *Knocks on wood twice*. The two different places I went the pharmacists were impressed when I said it was his very first prescription when they asked me if he had been there before.

I thought I would share some tips on keeping your children healthy.

Wash hands after going to the bathroom and before you eat. You can also wash your hands when you come home from the grocery store.

Parents you are the example, if you start a routine your child will follow

If you are eating something with nuts wash your hands after, so you don’t accidently make someone else sick.

Take multivitamins every day

Eat healthy and drink a lot of milk and water

Keep your hands to yourself, don’t share hairbrushes, lip balms etc, with your friends. They may be sick.

Be aware of what sicknesses are going around where your child goes to school

Keep doctor’s appointments and well checkups.

If you choose to vaccinate, keep up to date on their shots

Don’t share drinks or share food with others

If your child gets sick, remind them to:

Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and throw away used tissues.

Stay home from school or daycare until you don’t have a fever or at least a day or two with a cold.

Sometimes when you are sick you miss out on fun things like field day or a trip to the playground but you don’t want to make your friends sick too.

Rest as much as possible, even if you think you feel better, you still need rest.

Even if your mom pays extra for them to flavor your meds and it tastes bad, you still need to take it.

Parents don’t stress, sickness happens. It’s usually just a germ they picked up. Remember the more
children your child is in contact with, the more likely they will get sick.

Thar She Blows.....Chunks.......

Everyone has an embarrassing story. Embarrassing things happen to everyone. I thought I would tell you about my most embarrassing story that ever happened to me. In high school, in English class we went on a field trip to see The Miracle Worker. I went to a huge high school so there were a lot of people that went on the field trip with my class. I am pretty sure it was half of the English classes. I was fine when the play started; I am semi claustrophobic when I am around a bunch of people in a small space. Around intermission, I started feeling sick. I thought maybe it was because I was hungry so I bought a drink and a candy bar and ate it while we were waiting for the play to start again. All the sudden my head and stomach really started to hurt. I told my teacher and he told me to go talk to the nurse that came on the field trip with us. They brought a nurse in occasions like this one.

She knew me quite well out of the 4,000 or so students at my high school. I did have a habit of “being sick” during school. I liked school just not the classes. She didn’t believe me; she refused to call my mom. Seriously, if I was going to pretend to be sick I wouldn’t do it on a field trip. After all I was already out of classes for most the day. I kept telling her, I don’t feel good. I am sick. She had me lay down on a bench. I managed to make it through the play without getting sick. We had to ride the bus for 45 minutes to get back to school. As soon as the bus started moving for a while, I started vomiting. I vomited and vomited and then vomited some more all over the bus. I vomited on the nurse and another teacher. I vomited on people’s book bags that were on the ground. The bus stopped at the gas station so I could get a Kiwi Strawberry Snapple to drink to try and settle my stomach. I was also able to clean up a little bit. I am sure the bus garage hated me that day.

When we got back to the school, I went to the nurse and she called my mom. Everyone in my grade knew about the bus disaster by the end of the day. I was so embarrassed. People would ask me about it. I had it come up a couple times even after high school. I think it is funny now. You bet when the nurse saw me in her office and I said I don’t feel good she believed me.

What is your embarrassing story? Please share it with me.

God Bless Tylenol!

Noah has a cold. He doesn’t get sick very often as he is pretty healthy. I am extremely happy about that. He has had the sniffles and a runny nose. He has been sneezing and coughing as well. I know that the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) says not to give children under 6 cough or cold medicines. So of course I would not do that.

Noah has a fever of 101.5 tonight. I gave him some dye free cherry Children’s Tylenol. That he thinks is absolutely delicious. It is hidden on a high shelf in the hall linen closet right next to the baby powder. Well at least I don’t have to fight him to take it. I am happy to report that his fever has gone down already. It is still kind of high but it is an improvement.

I started thinking about how Tylenol has been a great thing to have in my home and all the times I have given it to Noah. It was there when he got his shots almost every time. It helped take the pain away and reduce the fever from the DTAP vaccine. It was there when Noah was cutting his little teeth. It was there when he has been sick. It is really nice to have a product that has been around for forever and you can rely on in your times of pain and fevers.

I remember the taste of chewable Children’s Tylenol. I used to have a pill issue where I couldn’t swallow pills so I would just take the Children's Tylenol chewables. It got to the point when I got to be a certain age and I was taking so many of them just to make a dose. Then I learned about sticking them in apple sauce. Works like a charm. Heck that is how I got my prenatals down sometimes when I was pregnant with Noah.

I used to get really bad car sickness. Whenever we would drive home from North Carolina when I was young my mom would always give me a car sickness pill in a spoon of peanut butter. Please, please don’t do it. It traumatized me. Well not really but it is not a good suggestion in my opinion.

God Bless Tylenol!!
I really am glad that Tylenol is such a trust worthy caring company.
Thanks Tylenol!
