At the bottom of this post about our story, there’s a fun giveaway to get you started on helping the world.
Creative fundraising ideas can come in different forms, but our favorite is with shoes.
Did
you know that around the world many families live on as little as $2 a
day? That’s considered extreme poverty by international standards.
And,
were you aware that each year over 600 million shoes are thrown into
landfills across our country? This is harmful to the environment because
it can take more than 80 years for a shoe to break down. In addition,
as shoes decompose, the chemical compounds emit toxins into the air,
which are harmful to health.
Shoe drive fundraising
is a way to address your fundraising needs, help families in developing
nations and lower our collective carbon footprint. All of my
experiences led me to develop Funds2Orgs.
As
a father, although I was a shoe sales executive, I did not like when my
daughter came home from school or her youth groups and I was asked to
sell candy. I also had to sell cookie dough. I knew my friends, families
and work colleagues did not want the calories and I felt uncomfortable
pushing things to people I knew that they didn’t want or need. Little
did I know I would someday have the opportunity to create something for
so many.
I
remember watching my television set with the rest of the world watching
the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami. As a shoe executive, I knew I
had to do something. I would have been a fool if I didn’t try to help.
Within a few weeks and with a wonderful team, we sent hundreds of
thousands of shoes to adults and children who had been affected and lost
everything. This happened again after Hurricane Katrina and then the
earthquake in Haiti. In total, over 17 million shoes were sent to people
who were in need after natural disasters.
It was all of those experiences that led me to Funds2Orgs. Over the years, I’ve spoken to thousands of people. And, what I realized is that a lot of people associated with schools, youth sports groups, nonprofits, churches and others felt
like I did when I was raising money for my daughter’s school and clubs.
There’s donor fatigue. People don’t want to sell things, and donors
always want to have to support their favorite cause with money.
Funds2Orgs is the leading shoe drive fundraising social enterprise in North America. Our shoe drive partners simply collect gently worn, used and new shoes. We issue a check based on the total weight of the shoes collected.
