Busch Gardens is not for us

When we first moved here we were invited to go to Busch Gardens with our neighbors, they were going to get a year pass for $20 a month. I thought hey that's affordable. It was much cheaper in the long run  then the one day pass of $150.  We were talking about going every three weeks. I waited a while because I wasn't sure if it was just for Florida residents. We had only lived here for like two weeks. Come to find out after she bought their passes it was. I am glad I waited because I wouldn't have been able to use it. I really wanted to go, I had great memories of the Busch Gardens in Williamsburg Virginia when I was younger. I knew Noah loves animals so I thought he would have an amazing time, but I was wrong. It was a total nightmare. Noah hated it. Meltdown after meltdown after meltdown. It was hot but not too bad. He didn't wanna do anything. He rode one ride. He threw a huge fit at the Sesame Street show. I had to carry him away because he was making such a racket it was interfering with the people trying to watch the show. I felt so bad and embarrassed because Noah was ruining their good time. Thankfully she was understanding.

The food was really expensive and honestly horrible.  After meltdown number five I decided never again. He did enjoy feeding the kangaroos but other than that forget about it. It was like a monster took over my sweet boy. He told me over and over he never wanted to go there again. I was thinking me either. It totally sucked because I dropped an insane amount of money for the tickets and food and everything. It could be worse. I could have had to pay 20 dollars a month for 12 months for nothing. Normally Noah is well behaved and loved it. There were of course armies of people from other countries that just took over the walkways. He would say can we go home now or I wanna go home every five minutes like clockwork. If we weren't with friends we would have probably left right away. I thought about calling my mom to come pick us up, but thought that would be really rude.   We will not go back to Busch Gardens again. Next time we will go to LEGOland I know he will love it there and probably want to move in and  the only time I would cry is when we have to leave.

Sheilacakes Cocktail Recipe

A couple years ago, I came up with a drink that I call Sheilacakes. It's kind of one of those made up recipes, I just threw together with what I had. After all that is how all the popular drinks probably started out. Who knows, Sheilacakes could be the next Bahama Mama.
Here is the recipe:
Sheilacakes

2 shots coconut rum
1 shot Peach schnapps
1 Hi-c Flashing Fruit Punch juice box

Mix them all in a big glass and enjoy! Please drink responsibly.

Learning how to Drive

It’s time for yet another Sheilacakes confession.  I don’t have a driver’s license.  I don’t mean that I don’t have one because I lost it or it was suspended.  I mean I don’t know how to drive.  I know that is kind of weird. I just didn’t have a desire to drive. I didn’t get excited about getting my first car or anything.  When I was sixteen a friend of mine was in a serious car accident and became paralyzed so, I was not in any hurry to learn how to drive or get my license. Now that I am a mom to a kindergartener, who has all kinds of programs, has to be taken to and from school, and loves to go to the library, it is about that time to learn.

Here in Florida, you have to take a written test to get your permit now.  I don’t know a whole lot about driving, besides what I learned from riding in a car.  I would probably have to study. I don’t want to have to take it a bunch of times. I don’t have time for that.   I don’t even know what all you need to know for the test.  I have thought about doing private driving lessons.  I don’t want to be a 31 year old mom who is in driver’s education courses with 15 year olds.  They are immature and wouldn’t take the class seriously. I am too old and too busy to have kids goofing off when I am trying to actually learn.  Thankfully, with the internet and sites about driver’s education, I will be in a good place to start looking for a school to attend to be able to drive. My Grandma Rose didn’t drive either. I think she drove once and that was enough for her.  My grandpa always did all the driving and he didn’t mind one bit.

Do you know any adults that don’t know how to drive?

High School Students using Craigslist for Fraud?

I occasionally browse Craigslist for writing jobs. I have never done one but I like to look and see what is potentially out there. I also look for social media jobs that would be interesting. I was browsing Craigslist as I normally do and I saw that a couple people were looking for someone to do school work for them. One person wanted to pay someone to do his online work and another one wanted someone to finish all of his friends high school course work.  This is so wrong! It is totally dishonest and bad. It reminds me of when tv shows would talk about people buying someone's old reports or even a kid doing a bully's homework. I didn't realize this was going on. If Noah ever tried that he would be in so much trouble. Is this a new trend? Why isn't Craigslist doing anything? This brings cheating to a whole new level. Who knows if the person who did online school or online college is really the person holding the degrees? Man, this is so sad.

This is a real Craigslist posting. I took the screenshot myself.

They are looking for someone smart. No way! You have to complete a really long and I mean really long list of things which all have a final exam. There are probably about 40 things on the list. You have to do it in five days but if you complete it in less than five then you get a $100 bonus. The best part of this ad... You have to keep it a secret. My dear sweet Craigslist user. You don't know about IP addresses do you? They know where you are. They can find out who you are. You want to scam some school and you publicly post about it on Craigslist.  You are not only breaking moral laws but I am sure there are some kind of fraud laws that you, your friend, and the person hired are breaking.   You are also defrauding the Florida Department of Education. Obviously  your friend has slacked off for who knows how long but then all the sudden has the urge to amount to something and gets everything done in five days or less. He will get a B average too.  That is not at suspicious, not one tiny bit.

So, if you work for the online high school in Florida and someone gets all his work done in five days or less with a b average it might be worth taking a look at it.  My dear sweet Craigslist poster don't worry your friend can still get their high school diploma in prison. Don't give up hope.

TV Today?

What on Earth is going on with TV these days? Why are there shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Jersey Shore on? I saw a commercial for a show called The Best Funeral Ever and it was like crazy. Why would people allow themselves to be filmed? Why would networks allow this stuff? How is it funny or cool? I just don't understand it. There is nothing amusing about a foul mouthed so called beauty queen. There is nothing interesting about drunk people acting crazy. This Best Funeral Ever show is almost a mockery of death. I understand the whole celebrating someone's life and all that but it's not really something to broadcast and market, in my opinion. I have never been to a funeral where there was a happy and fun tone. Funerals are supposed to be a time of mourning and not a chance to have a barbecue sauce fountain. It's as though the more outrageous and trashy you are the more you have a chance at your own show. I guess morals have gone out the window.

I know that in the 70's and 80's and the 90's there were questionable shows for the time. I know I wasn't allowed to watch The Golden Girls and I wasn't sure why, until I got older and understood the jokes. I wasn't allowed to watch MTV when it was still music videos. I have watched shows like Three's Company, The Golden Girls and All in the Family and I am thinking wow some of the jokes and references are pretty risqué. I also understood it better.  Shows today make Archie Bunker look like Pa Wilder from Little House on the Prairie.  I am kind of worried about what kinds of shows will be on when Noah's a teenager.  Will there be any censorship left? There isn't a lot left to begin with these days but it makes me wonder.

Three Companies I would love to work with

I want to share with you all three products and companies I love and why I want to work with them for a chance to win a ticket to The Reviewer's Retreat. Reviewer’s Retreat is the first and only blog conference geared 100% toward brand/blog relationships. I would love to attend with my family. It's in Atlanta!

These are not in any order:
1. Dr. Pepper. That is a no brainer. I love Dr. Pepper so much. I should buy stock in it. I probably have personally paid someone's salary with the amount of Dr. Pepper I buy.

2. Kitchenaid because I love to cook and bake. They would be a great company to work with because all of their products are great.

3. Sleep Number aka Select Comfort. They are my dream company. I would love to own a sleep number bed. My best friend has one and we decided that my sleep number is 25 because I like to be swallowed in to the mattress.

I hope I win the giveaway as it will be a lot of fun to meet fellow bloggers and enjoy learning and making awesome memories.

MIRACLES HAPPEN HERE

By Robin Dickson, Pres./CEO

DOGS FOR THE DEAF, INC.

Dogs for the Deaf has been making miracles happen every day for over 35 years.  Dogs are rescued from shelters and receive medical care and special training so they can go on to help people with various disabilities.

During their four-six months in training, all the dogs learn obedience skills and each dog enters one of three different training programs in order to learn how to be a Hearing Dog, an Autism Assistance Dog, or a Program Assistance Dog.  The training is all done with positive reinforcement, using toys and treats to motivate the dogs to learn.  The dogs enjoy the new “games” they learn, not realizing that these “games” will be extremely important, even life-saving, once they are living with and helping their new partners.

Once each dog is completely trained, it is matched with one of the applicants on our waiting list.  It is very important to place each dog in the home and with the client where its skills will be best utilized.  The trainer then takes the dog to the person’s home, wherever the person lives in the U.S., and spends a week training the person how to maintain the dog’s training.

Hearing Dogs are trained to alert their trainer to a variety of household sounds—door bell, door knock, oven buzzer, alarm clock, smoke alarm, telephone, someone calling the person’s name, etc.  These normal household sounds are taken for granted by people who can hear.  We don’t realize how important they are to living safely and securely in our world.  Once our Hearing Dogs are trained and placed with their partners who have hearing loss, the dogs alert the people to all of the sounds that occur around them.  Suddenly, with the dog there, the person is aware things happening around them and the needs of people around them.  Our Hearing Dogs have alerted parents to their crying children who are in trouble, to the smoke alarm (saving lives and homes), to family members needing help, to the alarm clock so they can get to work on time, and so much more.  One client was thrilled when her dog started alerting her when the ice cream truck went by outside the house.  It wasn’t that she needed or wanted ice cream; it was about being aware of the things around her—just like all the rest of us are—she was part of the real world.  Another of our clients said that the best thing about her Hearing Dog is that he allowed her to relax.  Because of her deafness, she had always been tense and “on guard.”  Once, she had her Hearing Dog, she was able to relax because she knew Harley would alert her to any sounds or happenings around her.  These dogs provide self-confidence, security, and safety—truly miraculous.

Autism Assistance Dogs are trained to help children with autism.  They help calm the children and lessen meltdowns and tantrums.  They help the children with eye contact and bonding, and they are trained to serve as an anchor to prevent the children from bolting and running.  The tendency of children with autism to bolt and run causes a great deal of stress for parents and many injuries and even deaths for these children.  With the dogs anchoring the children, they are not able to bolt and run away into unsafe situations.  These dogs provide countless miraculous benefits to the children and their families.

Program Assistance Dogs are trained to help professionals (teachers, counselors, therapists, physicians, court room advocates, etc.) with their students, clients, and patients.  The dogs are individually trained to increase the effectiveness of the professionals’ work. Nelson is a Program Assistance Dog we placed with a teacher of a special needs class at a middle school.  Nelson is trained to help the students focus on their work and motivate them to behave appropriately.  Nelson is enhancing the students’ learning and also increasing their social skills.  The school Principal told us that Nelson has changed the relationship between the students in the special needs class and the students in the regular classes.  He said that the students in the regular classes are no longer making fun of the special needs students.  With Nelson in their classroom, they have become the “cool” kids, and the rest of the students want to interact with them.  This is truly miraculous and helping students learn both in the classroom and in society.

Besides the dogs we save and the clients we serve, there is another miracle at Dogs for the Deaf—the faithful and generous donors who support our work.  You see, there is no charge to the people who receive these dogs.  Yes, you heard it right; we give them the dogs free of charge (except for a $50 application fee).  Our work is totally funded by people who want to help us create these miracles. Donations come from all across the U.S. and dogs are placed with applicants nationwide.

If you would like to learn more about the miracles that happen at Dogs for the Deaf, check out our website www.dogsforthedeaf.org or call us at 541-826-9220.  Maybe you or someone you know could benefit from a specially trained dog; maybe you would like to help us save a dog’s live and help someone with a disability.  Contact us and become a DFD Miracle Worker.

Strawberry Daiquiri Recipe

I live in Florida and we are in the middle of Strawberry season. It is my favorite fruit so of course I am excited that I can get amazing strawberries from Plant City Florida in the winter. Being from Indiana instead of being able to buy a quart of strawberries for $1.99 they would be closer to five dollars.

Since I do like strawberries so much, naturally I would love to drink strawberry daiquiris. When I was making my strawberry fruit leather I decided I would share a great daiquiri recipe.  I know you can buy the mix, it's not that great and it's expensive and made with who knows what.

Strawberry Daiquiris
1 quart strawberries
1 cup rum
Ice

Place strawberries in the blender an purée. Add rum and ice and turn it on.  Grab a strawberry  to garnish and a little umbrella and a beach and enjoy!

I love to watch Storage Hunters

On Sunday nights, you can find me watching a show called Storage Hunters. It's on Trutv. It's about people who go to storage auctions and bid on units that the owners stop paying for. They can't go inside and they have to base the value by what they can see. Sometimes there are a lot of boxes and you can't really tell but other times you can see what is in there easily. I love the dynamic of the bidders. My favorite are Brandon and Lori. I always want them to win big. There are other bidders I don't really care for and may or may not cheer when they spend $45000 on wristbands. It's always fun to see what they can find. Some units are awesome and some are junk. It is a complete gamble sometimes and you just hope that you find something big. I am pretty sure that normal storage auctions aren't always filled with so much treasure. I have thought about going to a storage auction before, but I would probably end up with crock pots and toasters and other odds and ends.

I totally understand the need of storage units because some people just have a lot of stuff. I know that when family members pass away the family wants to keep their stuff. When my grandma Rose passed away between all of us, I believe we kept almost everything. She had a lot of stuff including furniture.  Of course we all had our own furniture so this would be when a great storage company would come in handy. It's important to have one in a secured location with surveillance. You can never be too careful. Remember to pay your storage bill or your stuff could be auctioned off and I know I would cry if I lost the items my family has from my Grandma Rose.

Have you watched Storage Hunters? Have you ever been to a storage auction?
