October is
Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Did you know that 1 in 4 women will experience
domestic violence in their lifetime? Men are victims of Domestic Violence too.
There are 3 million men in the US that are victims of physical assault. I was a
victim of domestic violence. My ex-husband was very abusive to me. He was very
cruel. He brainwashed me in to thinking I was totally worthless and how no one
would ever love me. I spent most of our marriage in fear of him. I didn’t tell
anyone about what was going on. I was too scared. He wouldn’t work, and I
remember being asked by an old boss if I was a victim of domestic violence. I
said no, and I lied. I couldn’t even ask
my ex-husband what he wanted for dinner without being cussed out. I remember
coming home from the grocery store and giving him different choices of Alfredo
choices. I didn’t even like it, but he did. He said what about shut the beep up
Alfredo. Most of the time it was verbal and emotional but it was also physical.
Domestic Violence can also be verbal or emotional. No one deserves to live in a
situation where you are treated so poorly. No one should have to live in fear for
their safety or their families’ safety. More than three million children witness
domestic violence in their home each year. It is really hard to know what to do
in this situation. It’s normal to feel guilty or ashamed about it. You may not
know what to do and how to survive after leaving. There is definitely help out
there.
There are many ways to get help. There are more than 20,000 calls to Domestic Violence Hotlines nationally on a typical day.

I was able to muster up the courage to kick my
ex-husband out when he told me that he prayed for the baby I miscarried to die.
Not everyone is lucky enough to get out. Thankfully, I have a wonderful support system. We really need to keep them safe. With
